A starting spark

Welcome!

I suppose I ought to start with the purpose behind calling this a grimoire. Grimoire coming from the French grammaire (like the English grammar) which can mean “grammar/learning” as well as “incantation or spells”. And, in turn, the French came from a related Latin word which evolved from a Greek word for “art of letters”. Way back when, learning including studies of magic, so the connection made more sense at the time. Nowadays a grimoire commonly associated with witches, both the fantasy concept and spiritual practitioners, as a book of spells. Think about ‘Book’ the Sanderson Sisters used to cast spells.

I’ve decided to name this blog a grimoire because of the purpose for my writing. My business goal is to bring joy and wonder to people’s lives through arts. Art and creativity to me are like a real world magic, able to stir the emotions, bring symbols and concepts into felt experiences, tricking the mind into perceiving a 3D world full of fantastical things from 2D lines and shapes. Such complexity and meaning from something that’s been done for generations over tens of thousands of years, yet is constantly being presented in new combinations! Such magic.

This blog is intended as a place to record information relating to arts, like covering repairs, activities, DIY, and resources on creative practice. So in this sense, a collection of letters on doing art is writing about bringing magic into the world. Hence, a grimoire.

I’ll be keeping my news and mundane ramblings to a newsletter while this blog will be reserved for longer form, resourceful content.

So, there we are! I look forward to growing this grimoire into a body of resource and inspiration so you can make magic of your own.

Cheers,

Fern

ps- If you are interested in a physical grimoire of your own, I will be printing journals and sketchbooks in the future. Or head over to your nearest art market and see if you can find one by an artist local to you.
